  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 8 oz dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • Fresh orange slices or candied orange peel

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare three 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla; mix until smooth. Stir in hot water.
  3. Divide the batter among prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  4. For the orange cream filling: Whisk sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks in a saucepan. Slowly add orange juice and cook until thickened; stir in zest and butter.
  5. For the ganache: Heat heavy cream until steaming. Pour over chocolate and let sit before stirring until smooth; add butter.
  6. Assemble the cake by layering cakes with orange filling in between each layer and covering with ganache.
