  • 2 ½ tablespoons sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Black food coloring
  • Red food coloring

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the hot milk and egg yolk; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine flour, sugar, and yeast.
  3. Mix in the warm milk mixture along with melted butter and salt until well combined.
  4. Knead the dough by hand for about 10 minutes or use a stand mixer for approximately 5 minutes until smooth.
  5. Divide the dough into two or three portions and let them rest covered with a tea towel.
  6. Color each portion of dough with black and red food coloring as desired.
  7. Allow the colored doughs to rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1.5 hours).
  8. Roll out each piece into rectangles, stack them by color preference, then roll tightly to form a loaf.
  9. Let the loaf rise again for about an hour before baking it at 375°F (190°C) for approximately 30 minutes.
