  • 4 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • ⅔ cup soy sauce
  • ⅓ cup apple juice
  • ⅓ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup bourbon (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • For garnish: fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, mix cornstarch with salt and pepper. Toss chicken pieces to coat evenly.
  2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the coated chicken for about 6 minutes, turning halfway through. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, sauté minced garlic until fragrant. Add chicken broth, soy sauce, apple juice, ketchup, bourbon (if using), vinegar, brown sugar, ginger, onion powder, and red pepper flakes. Bring to a gentle boil.
  4. Reduce heat and return chicken to the skillet. Simmer for about 10 minutes until sauce thickens slightly.
  5. Optional: For a thicker sauce, mix cornstarch with cold water and stir into the sauce; simmer for an additional 2 minutes.
